Environment and biodiversity
Residents regard Sandgate's Einbunpin Lagoon, parkland and wildlife as a vital part of Sandgate's distinctiveness and identity, and want Council to take this seriously in their planning decisions.
Published 7 May 2026
These concerns were discussed in multiple posts and comments:
- Einbunpin Lagoon is described as a degraded but potentially significant asset. KSBA calls for its genuine rehabilitation - improved water quality, enhanced plantings, and green space - rather than its conversion to a Southbank-style ‘sweetener’ attached to rezoning proposals.
- Sandgate is recognised as a significant bird habitat and has areas with international RAMSAR listing - Dowse Lagoon, Third Lagoon, and Moreton Bay. Residents feel this needs to be given real weight by planners and developers.
- Moreton Bay’s RAMSAR listing is raised as a reason to treat stormwater and environmental impact with particular seriousness. The bay is described as a natural treasure that planners and developers are treating with “deliberate disregard.”
- Brighton Road street trees are described as being in a poor state, with calls for any development plan to actively improve the green canopy along this corridor.
- The community believes that the unique environmental features of Sandgate cannot be separated from planning decisions. The bay, the lagoons, the wildlife and the vegetation are what makes Sandgate special throughout Brisbane and there is concern that this is at grave risk with en masse high-rise development in the town centre.
